In order to meet the provincial goal of 1.5 million homes, an increase in the initiation of housing starts is crucial. There had been a slow start due to issues like inadequate municipal sewage treatment capacities, energy supply shortages, labour shortages, costs and increased interest rates. In 2022, there were about 96,000 new housing starts province-wide. The goal for 2023 was 110,000; however, as of August, there were about 2444,500 new housing units started across the province. Although surpassing this target is a step in the right direction, the yearly amounts of new units started will have to continue to increase in order to try and meet the 1.5 million homes goal.
